The Production Mechanic performs a variety of tasks and services in support of the daily production of the newspaper.
This role requires a combination of in-depth expertise of a journey person in specific trades such as machinist, mechanic and central plant, demonstrated proficiency in key functional areas of print operations. Must demonstrate sufficient skills and knowledge to keep all major mechanical systems safe and in operation during production. Areas included are platemaking, pressroom, post press and newsprint as well as central plant systems such as HVAC, power distribution, and lighting. Also possesses the ability to restore operations in the event of power outages or other events that cause downtime in critical systems.
The Production Mechanic is responsible for assessing, assigning, directing and following up on repair and maintenance jobs for both production and facility equipment. The Production Mechanic communicates and documents all daily and project work activities, and is able to safely perform the most complex, difficult assignments with minimal to no direction and can answer questions or train other personnel in those areas.
Journey level knowledge and demonstrated proficiency with general machine shop practices. Experience and knowledge in the installation and replacement of complex mechanical parts and assemblies and demonstrated safe work practices. The set-up and operation of moderate to complex jobs on machine tools such as lathes, mills, grinders, welding and fabrication, sheet metal fabrication, and the proper use of all hand and power assisted tools.
Thorough knowledge and ability to utilize all relevant tools and test equipment.
The knowledge and experience needed to identify and resolve problems safely during production runs in all major areas of operations including platemaking, pressroom and post press.
Also the ability to troubleshoot and resolve problems with central plant functions under production conditions.
