The Los Angeles Times seeks an ambitious mission-driven leader to take the reins of High School Insider, a growing youth journalism startup at the largest metropolitan newspaper in the country.


HS Insider works with over 270 schools and 2,400 students to help them define the high school experience and empower them to make their voices heard. Since the program launched in late 2014, we’ve published nearly 5,000 student stories. We work with English, history, ethnic studies, as well as journalism classes to help students publish everything from cartoons and fiction to documentaries and opinion pieces. Throughout the year, HS Insider offers one-of-a-kind opportunities such as paid internships, events, contests and conferences.


We've accomplished a lot over the past three plus years, and we're looking for our next leader!


The Project Lead is responsible for all aspects of the program, including strategic, operational and managerial duties.


Strategic (25%)

  • Strategic vision, planning and reporting on all elements of program
  • Budget and P&L oversight
  • Build strategic partnerships with key public and private stakeholders
  • Design program plan for 6-week paid summer internship with internal and external stakeholders
  • Work hand-in-hand with student board of directors to launch new programs, content campaigns and initiatives
  • Identify and secure operational and initiative-specific grant funding 

Operational (50%)

  • Oversee existing structures for:
    • New student integration
    • Editorial story processing
    • Newsletter and SMS communication
    • Inputting, storing and utilizing student and adviser data
  • Execute quarterly HS Insider IRL events
  • Execute yearly Fall Journalism Day at California State University Northridge
  • Execute and own all aspects of the paid summer internship
  • Build the program through school visits across Southern California
  • Lead bi-weekly student board of directors meetings over video conference
  • Build and maintain relationships with the LA Times newsroom to cultivate mentors and allies
  • Identify, design and execute HS Insider activations at both LA Times Events such as Festival of Books and third party events to further awareness, participation and opportunities in the program
  • Interface with internal partners in sales and business development to identify and promote revenue opportunities
  • Interface with marketing department to promote specific contests (such as the Discover Asia Correspondent Contest) and highlight the program’s successes

Managerial (25%)

  • Manage academic year college interns
  • Manage summer high school and college interns



  • 2-3 years work experience in journalism, media, community organizing, government, public relations or related field (internship experience is acceptable)
  • Bachelor's or equivalent undergraduate degree in communications, journalism, sociology, business, law or related field
  • Passion for and experience with working with young people
  • Proven team leader with results-oriented focus
  • Strong work ethic and deep-seated personal integrity, with intense drive to reach goals and lead a successful team effort
  • Must have the ability to manage multiple projects while maintaining a high level of organization and professionalism
  • Must have a positive, proactive attitude and entrepreneurial spirit and be driven to optimize results for students and partners
  • Must be enthusiastic, be able to work independently and as part of a team, and serve as a positive role model for HS Insider students and staff
  • Must possess strong writing skills, and experience with journalism and media
  • Experience working one-on-one and in groups with high school and college-aged students
  • Experience working in community organizing or youth empowerment organizations preferred
  • Familiarity and working knowledge of consumer-facing software such as WordPress, basic editing software, basic apps and websites strongly preferred
  • Must have working knowledge and skills with basic data analysis, Google Docs, Microsoft Excel & PowerPoint and Google Sheets
  • Bilingual capabilities preferred
  • Experience producing and editing video and multimedia a plus
  • Ability to travel by car in the LA Metro area is preferred
